“Contemporary Issues in Space Law”
Date : February 22nd & 23rd, 2017
About the Conference:
Ever since humanity became space-faring with the launch of the Sputnik 1 in 1957, it has wrestled with the issue of legal regulation of space activities. A fundamental principle of space law says that uses of outer space should not remain in favor of the advanced countries, and the benefits shall accrue to humanity as a whole. On the other hand, there have been efforts for more elaborate uses of Outer Space, and views that law should support utility oriented commercial and research activities. There is no unanimity of opinion, and the field is replete with both technical and legal prescriptions.
In recent years especially, the world has seen an unprecedented rise in both the number of space activities and the variety of their nature. Private enterprises and entrepreneurs are proliferating in all major nations and so are new ideas about uses of space. This has renewed the need for a more elaborate and comprehensive law of outer space, which can proactively tackle the challenges presented.
The need of the time, therefore, is to probe into the existing space law, and suggest alternatives to equip it with more tools in light of the contemporary activities in space.
With this aim in mind, the Center for International Law, ILS Law College Pune, is organizing a two day National Conference on Space Law. The theme for the conference is “Contemporary issues in Space Law”. In this fiftieth year of the Outer Space Treaty, this Conference will provide the participants with a platform to discuss and learn about various issues in Space Law.
