English Debating Society for the year 2013-2014

Faculty Co-ordinator – Dr. Deepa Paturkar & Dr. Nitish Nawsagaray

The English Debating Society, under the able guidance of Dr. Deepa Paturkar and later Dr. Nitish Nawsagaray organised various events in the academic year 2011-2012. Over 150 students of 1st to 5th BSL LL.B and 1st to 3rd LL.B actively participated in various intra and inter college competitions. These events ranged from elocution, conventional debates, Parliamentary debates, Model United Nations, Youth Parliaments inter alia.

The student co-ordinators, Bani Dikshit, Rutunjay Singh, Jyotirmay Deshmukh, Vaibhav Charalawar, Aankhi Ghosh, Dhruv Rajain, Neelu Mohan, Govind Manoharan, Geetanjali Joshi, Shantanu Singh, Vividh Tandon, Devashish Jagirdar and others have been associated with the functioning of the DebSoc right from the beginning of this academic year.
At the commencement of the Academic year the debating society organised an intra- college elocution completion in English to explore the hidden talent in the students.

Weekly practice sessions and workshops were organized for Parliamentary Debates and Hariyali Model United Nations wherein veteran debaters gave demonstrations and guided the students on the nuances and the intricacies involved.
The DEBSOC organised an intra college Parliamentary Debate (20th and 23rd August), based on which the ranks of the students were defined for future inter college competitions. This was judged by students of 5th BSL LL.B and 3rd LL.B. Over 70 students participated in the event. The winners were Madhupreetha E., Aankhi Ghosh and Krithika S. Furthermore, an intra college Elocution Competition (3rd August 2011) was also organised for the students. 80 students participated in the competition. The finals were judged by faculty members, Prof. Santosh Jaybhay and Mr. Nitin Apte. The winner was Zacarias Joseph.

On 24th December 2011, the DebSoc organized the A.D Shroff Elocution Competition. The competition was judged by Dr. T. Malegaonkar, Mrs. Suvarna H. And Mrs. Sonali Jadhav. Ganesh Kadam of 1st LL.B was awarded the first prize.
Herein below are mentioned some of the names of the students who have represented college in various debates, Model UNs, Parliamentary Debates etc.

  1. Model United Nations:
    Students represented ILS Law College in various inter-collegiate MUNs enumerated below:

    • 1. NLS MUN, Bangalore – Rudraneel Chattopadhyay was a member of the Executive Board and Prachi Tadsare received Special Mention as delegate of Mali in the African Union.
    • 2. GLC MUN, Mumbai – Sangeetha Ganesh and Zacarias Joseph received Special Mention and Best Delegate in UNHCR respectively.
    • 3. IIT Kanpur MUN – Devashish Jagirdar was a member of the Executive Board and Namit Oberoi and Raghav Prasad received High Commendation and Special Mention Awards respectively.
    • 4. IIMA, Ahmedabad – Namit Oberoi received Special Mention.
    • 5. MUNSophical, Sophia College for Women, Mumbai – Zacarias Joseph was awarded Best Delegate in the Joint Session of the African Union.
    • 6. Mindspark MUN, COEP, Pune- Zacarias Joseph and Solaiappan O. Were awarded Best Delegation.
      Further, students participated in various other MUNs such as TGIM Bangalore Chapter, BITSMUN Goa, IIT KGP MUN Kharagpur, Sympulse Pune, Symbhav Pune interalia.
  2. Parliamentary Debates:
    Students represented ILS in various inter-collegiate Parliamentary Debate Competitons namely SRCC, Gambit Fresher’s Parliamentary Debate 2011 (Anshul Chopra, Sanjana Bhatnagar, Sukanya Natrajan, Abhinav Garg and Ankush Jain); Xavier’s College. Mumbai (Aakanksha Saxena, Niharika Bapna; Niranjana Menon, Zacarias Joseph and Shruti Deb); Loyola’s College, Chennai (Niranjana Menon, Zacarias Joseph, Harshavardhan Ganesan and Shruti Deb); BITS, Pilani (Divyasha Mathur, Priyanka Chavan, Anshya Nair and Mohammed Bengali); NUALS, Kochi (Thulasi K. Raj, Janhavi Pande and Trisha Chandran); NLSIU, Bangalore (Aakanksha Saxena, Niharika Bapna and Vaibhav Charalwar).Justice V.M. Tarkunde Parliamentary Debate Competition :
    ILS Debating Society in association with Karanjawala and Co., New Delhi, conducted the 2nd Justice V.M. Tarkunde Memorial Parliamentary Debate 2012 on the 4th and 5th of March 2012, under the able guidance of Dr. Nitish Nawsagaray, Faculty In-charge of the English Debating Society. The format of the debate was 3 on 3 Asian’s Parliamentary Debate format. Teams from various colleges within Pune like Symbiosis Law School, Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce, Marathwada Mitramandal Law College participated in the event. Three preliminary rounds were held on the 4th of March and semi-finals and finals on the 5th of March.The adjudicating core for the debate was Mr. Nandakumar S, Rahul Harpanhalli and Vinamrata Dogra.

    The motion for the finals was “This house would force-feed those on hunger strikes”.

    The team comprising of Akash Karmakar, Sherbir Panag and Ameya Naik were adjudged winners while the team of Neel D’souza, Varsha Kashyap and Samudra Sarangi from Symbiosis Law School were runners-up. Zacarias Joseph won Best Adjudicator. All winners were awarded a cash-prize, trophies and certificates.

    Prior to the competition, a demo session was conducted for the participants on the 1st of March which included a demo debate and orientation session.

    The Organising Committee included Rutunjay Singh, Bani Dikshit, Aankhi Ghosh, Geetanjali Joshi, Vaibhav Charalwar, Govind Manoharan, Dhruv Rajain and Vividh Tandon.

  3. Debates and Elocutions:
    Aankhi Ghosh and Rohit Rathi were adjudged Winners in Waxing Eloquent, Symbiosis Arts and Commerce Debate, Pune 2012. Thulasi K. Raj and Aparajita Singh were declared Runners-Up in the COEP Debate, Pune 2011. Aankhi Ghosh was a finalist in the Synergy (Group Discussion) at Sri Ram College Debate Festival, Delhi 2012. Niranjana Menon and Zacarais Joseph participated in Wallstreet, Fergusson College, Pune 2012. Niranjana Menon and Harshavardhan Ganesan participated in Silhouttes, AFMC Pune 2012. Bani Dikshit was adjudged the 3rd Best Speaker in Firodiya Elocution Competition, Pune 2012.
