The Role and Rule of Environmental Law in Smart City Project

ILS Hariyali, The Environmental Law Cell of the college hosted a One-day environmental law conference on the 11th January, 2016. This activity was organized in association with Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival (KVIFF). Hariyali has also collaborated with KVIFF and launched a project “ECO-RANGERS”.

The Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival (KVIFF), India’s only film festival dedicated to the topic of environment, is being held for last nine years by the Kirloskar and Vasundhara Club. Every year, the environment experts, students, activists, filmmakers and enthusiasts from across the country participate in exclusive film screenings, panel discussions and allied activities throughout the festival.

This Conference provided an opportunity to the students to hear experts, and have effective and meaningful discussions with them on the matters pertaining to Environmental issues related to smart city project. The theme of the conference was “The Role and Rule of Environmental Law in Smart City Project” with Mr. D.T. Devale (Sr. Law Officer, MPCB), Ms. Supriya Dangare (NGT, Pune) and Mr. Sarang Yadwadkar as the resource persons.

Mr. D. T. Devale apprised the gathering of the “Environmental Legislations in India”. Ms. Supriya Dangare (Advocate, National Green Tribunal, and Pune) discussed the “Smart City and Environmental Attributes.” Mr. Sarang Yadwadkar engaged in an immensely enthralling discussion and spoke about the topic of “Fight against river encroachment” after the screening of a documentary which showcased the effects of road construction in river bed.
Moreover, RJ Apoorva from Radio 91 shared her experiences in recycling and composting materials and how she grows her own vegetables organically. The conference not only raised a lot of questions in the minds of the attendees but also lead to awareness about the status quo. A group of 35 students with a few professionals in the field of environmental law research participated in this conference.
