Legal AID Center -2017-18

For the academic year 2017-18, the Legal Aid Centre started working from July 2017. The Centre has its meetings from Monday to Thursday from 12.30 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. The classes that participate in the activities of the Centre are II & III LL.B., II to V B.S.L.LL.B. and LL.M.

 The activities of the Centre include:

  •         Legal Aid and Literacy Camps in rural and urban areas.
  •         Providing legal aid to the poor and needy
  •         Legal Aid Clinics
  •         Preparation of Reading Material
  1. I. Legal Aid and Literacy Camps
  2. In this academic year, 8 legal literacy camps have been held both in rural and urban areas. Details of the camps are as follows:-

    1. Legal Aid and Literacy Camp – Dehu Gaon, Taluka- Haveli, Dist.- Pune 
          Date: – 28th August 2017
    2. Under the guidance of Mr. D. P. Kendre and Dr. K.S. Waghmare, nearly 30 students of III BA. LL.B participated in this camp. This legal literacy camp was a collaborative effort of ILS Law College with the local administration of Dehu Gaon to emphasize on the need for legal education and create awareness about the various remedies available under law for the aggrieved individuals. Dr. Waghmare gave introduction about ILS Law College and Legal aid Activities which are being conducted by the legal aid centre of ILS Law College.

      The students performed street plays and delivered talks on the following topics:-

      • Rights of woman under the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 (Mr. D. P. Kendre and Varad Kolhe)
      • The Right to Information, 2005 (Mr. D. P. Kendre, Riya Bramhe and Madhura Bhandarkar)
      • The Dowry Prohibition Act 1961 (Satyajit Langde)
      • Street Play on Child Labour (Omkar Chavan, Vasantu Vade, Madhura Bhandarkar, Amar Raut, Asit Chaware, Vaishnavi Kalbhor, Satyajit Langde and Shraddha Patole).
      • Street play on domestic violence (Pranali Kshirsagar, Sanket Supekar, Adhishree Jadhav, Madhu Agarwal, Riya Bramhe, Harshad Jickhar and Satyajit Langde)

      The ILS students, with an attempt to create awareness among the villagers, conducted a legal awareness parade with various social messages in relation to the problems prevalent in the society. The camp was anchored by Sanket Supekar, who was also the architect of the street plays on Child Labour and Domestic Violence.

      Mr. D.P Kendre concluded the Camp with a vote of thanks, appreciating the support from the local village administration for the organization of the legal literacy camp and assured assistance and support from the ILS Legal Aid Cell. The camp witnessed participation of 200 villagers who watched with keen interest.

      Student Participants:- Sanath Adhav played a pioneering role in the organization of the event and was instrumental in creating an environment for the camp with a team of Asit Chaware, Aditya Waghmare, Surya Prakash Gaikwad, Vaibhav More, Kartik Tope, Udit Bharaddwaj and Nikhil Dubey.

    3. Legal Aid and Literacy Camp – Kashti Village, Tal. Shrigonda, Dist. Ahmednagar
          Date:- 25th January 2018
    4. Under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar, Ms. Isha Saxena (Assistant Professor) and students of III and IV B.A.LL.B participated in this camp. It was organised at the Parikrama Educational Sankul, Kashti and was attended by Shri Babanrao Pachpute (Former Minister of Maharashtra), Shri. Pawar (Police Inspector of Shrigonga). Ms. Isha Saxena gave introduction about ILS Law College and Legal aid Centre of the College, with the help of power point presentation, short films and audio-visual means.

      Faculty members and Students explained various laws to the participants such as:-

      • The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 (Dr. Tejaswini  Malegaonkar)
      • The Right to Information Act, 2005 (Swapnil Falke, IV BA.LL.B.)

      • Vishakha Guidelines for the Prevention of Sexual harassment at workplace (Rahul Gangurde, IV BA.LL.B.)

      • Cyber Law and Security (Mayur Avhad, IV BA. LL.B.)

      Vaibhavi Dhotre (IV BA.LL.B.) and Aniruddh Awalgaonkar (II BA.LL.B.) performed on the poem (Wo Aurat Hai Wo Nari Hai) relating to existence of woman before introducing laws related to women. Prajakta Nagarale, Shubham Gharbudave, Shubham Barkade, Rutuja Bhagawat, Aniket Chaudhari and Babaji Waghmode (all IV BA.LL.B.) made the posters and helped in coordinating the camp.

      ILS Faculty and students interacted with nearly 100 villagers and 200 college students of Kashti village and simplified the implication of law by citing examples of day-to-day life.

    5. Legal Literacy Camp – Village Padegaon, Taluka Khandala, Dist. Satara
           Date – 12 February 2018
    6. Under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar, Dr. Deepa Paturkar (Assistant Professor) and students of III and IV B.A.LL.B participated in this camp. It was organised at the Mangalya Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Padegaon, Tal. Khandala, Dist. Satara. Dr. Deepa Paturkar gave introduction about ILS Law College and Legal aid Activities which are being conducted by the legal aid centre of ILS Law College.

      Faculty members and Students explained various laws to the participants such as:-

      • Information about Law as Career (Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar)
      • The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (Apurva Shelke and Swapnil Falke, both IV BA LL.B)
      • Traffic Rules (Aniket Bhosale, IV BA LL.B)
      • Police Citizen Portal (Aniket Chaudhari, IV BA.LL.B)
      • The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (Rahul Gangurde, IV BA.LL.B)
      • Cyber Law and Security (Ziauddin Sherkar, IV BA LL.B)
      • The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 (Satyajeet Landge, III BA.LL.B)

      While giving information, ILS faculty and students took help of the power point presentation, short films and audio-visual means. Rutuja Bhagawat, Vibha Joshi and Swapnil Suryawanshi (all II BA LL.B) helped in coordinating the camp.

      Nearly 100 Students and Teachers of Mangalya Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, Padegaon were benefitted by this Camp. They discussed there querries related to Marriage, Divorce and Family disputes with faculty and students of ILS Law College.

    7. Legal Literacy Camp – Chandrakant Darode Vidyalaya, BMCC Road, Pune
           Date – 15 February 2018
    8. Under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar, more than 25 students of III and IV BA.LL.B participated in this camp. Dr. Malegaonkar spoke about “Prominence of Legal Aid in today’s India”.

      ILS Students gave information on following laws to the school children through street plays:-

      • Fundamental Duties
      • Traffic Rules
      • Information on Child Abuse
      • Right to Education, Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation
      • Social Media and its effect on society.

      Student Participants:- Mallika Joshi, Poorva Sharma, Nitya Sharma, Netra Nair, Revati Kharde, Sayee Telang, Ziauddin Sherkar, Tejal Barge, Janhavi Deokar, Vidya Jaybhay, Aniket Chaudhari, Aniket Bhosale,  Aditiya Gujrati, Mahima Saini, Shankar Kendre, Rushikesh Wani, Ipshita Dey, Apurva Shelke, Richa Sati, Sagar Verma, Vibha Joshi, Pragati Khadole, Anhita Tiwari, Ashutosh Sisodiya and Rahul Gangurde.

      Swapnil Falke, Satyajit Landage, Swapnil Suryawanshi and Mayur Avhad coordinated this camp.

    9. Legal Aid and Literacy Camp – Kanhur Mesai, Tal. Shirur, Dist.- Pune
           Date: 15th February 2018
    10. A Legal Aid camp was organized by ILS Leagal Aid Centre in association with the Gram Panchayat of Kanhur Mesai at the Gram Panchayat office of Kanhur Mesai, Tal. Shirur, Dist. Pune. The main objective of the Camp was to create awareness regarding various laws and statutes relevant to the rural areas and rural community. Nearly 30 students of II L.L.B and III L.L.B participated in this camp under the guidance of Mr. D.P. Kendre. The Sarpanch and all Gram Panchayat members of village were present for the camp.

      Faculty members and Students explained various laws to the participants such as:-

      • The Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and other Women- related Laws (Sangeeta Sabne, II LL.B.)
      • Amendments in Panchayat & Village Elections including direct election of Sarpanch (Ashok Patil, II LL.B)
      • The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 (Shrinivas Desasi, II LL.B.)
      • Land Acquisition and related Acts (Prabhakar Narwane, II LL.B)
      • ‘7/12’ document (Navnath Kad, III LL.B.)
      • Brief outline of the Indian Constitution and an inspiring song about social inclusion (Sachin Mane, II LL.B)
      • The Right to Information, 2005 (Rahul Patil, I LL.B)

      Mr. D. P. Kendre summarized the proceedings and also took many questions from the audience and guided them on the same. Shri. Dadasaheb Kharde (Sarpanch, Kanhur Mesai) emphasized the importance of legal awareness at village level and thanked the village community for participating enthusiastically in the event. Shankar Kendre (II LL.B) compered the program.  Ganesh Waghole II LL.B coordinated the camp.

    11. Legal Aid and Literacy Camp – Kondhanpur, Pune
           Date – 18th February 2018
    12. The Post Graduate Department (LL.M) of ILS Law College  organized at Kondhanpur about 20 Kilometers from Pune under the guidance of Dr. Shaila Daware.

      The Legal Aid camp included three street plays on the following topics -:

      • The Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.
      • Save the Girl Child – Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994.
      • Eve –Teasing and Stalking (Indian Penal Code 1860 -Section 294 & 354D)

      The Camp also included three lectures on following topics:-

      • The Consumers Protection Act, 1986 (Rights of the Consumers)
      • The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
      • The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

      Around 40 to 45 villagers participated in the legal aid camp.

      Student Participants:- Pooja Munde, Laxmikant Suryawanshi, Rantadeep Patil, Varshy Kajalekar, Swaranjali Deshmukh, Swarada Rane, Nileema Bambarse, Kalyani Khandekar and Amey Pingale.

    13. Legal Literacy Camp – Panditrao Agashe Secondary English Medium School, Pune
           Date :- 27th February 2018
    14. Under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar, 26 students of III and IV B.A.LL.B participated in this camp. Dr. Malegaonkar spoke about “Significance of Legal Aid in Contemporary India.”

      ILS Students gave information on following laws to the school children through street plays:-

      • Traffic Rules
      • Information on Child Abuse
      • Right to Education, Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation
      • Social Media and its effect on society.

    15.   Legal Literacy Camp –  Ramchandra  Rathi Secondary Marathi Medium  School, Pune
           Date :- 28th  February 2018

    Under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar, 26 students of III and IV B.A.LL.B participated in this camp. Dr. Malegaonkar spoke about “Importance of Legal Aid.”

    ILS Students gave information on following laws to the school children through street plays:-

    • Traffic Rules
    • Information on Child Abuse
    • Right to Education, Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation
    • Social Media and its effect on society.

  3. II.   Legal Aid to poor and needy
  4. This year ILS Legal Aid Centre has entered into collaboration with Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat and Green Tara Foundation for providing legal aid and services to their membrs. In this academic year, we have provided assistance for litigation in 3 matrimonial disputes initiated before the Family Court and one criminal case which is pending before Additional Sessions Court. Five matrimonial were settled amicably.

    Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat – Total 21 cases were referred to our Centre. Most of the cases are related to family disputes.

    Green Tara Foundation – They referred 02 cases to the Centre.

  5. III.  Legal Aid Clinics
  6. We have our Legal Aid Clinics at Karve Institute, Deep Griha Tadiwala Road and Deep Griha Market Yard. These Clinics are attended by faculty members and students. Approximately 100 cases were dealt with by the faculty and students.

    Report of the Clinics:-

    1. Deepgrah Society, Ambedkar Nagr, Marketyard
    2. Dr. Deepa Paturkar coordinates the legal aid activities of this Clinic. She visits this Clinic on third Saturday of evey month. This year we received 12 new cases out of which majority of the cases were pertaining to matrimonial disputes. We have amicably resolved 8 cases by counselling and sent 4 cases to the lawyer for further action.  

      Legal Aid Camp:- Kashtakari Mahila Shibir was organized on 7th January, 2018. The camp was attended by more than 50 women who work on daily wages and also a member of self help group run by Deepgriha.  In order to create awareness among them, Dr. Deepa Paturkar conducted sessions on Right of Maintenance under Section 125 CR.P.C, Rights of Consumer and Necessary Legal documents that every family should possess.

    3.  Deepgrah Society Tadiwala Road, Pune
    4. Mr. D.P. Kendre coordinates the legal aid activities of this Clinic. He visits this Clinic on fourth Saturday of evey month. He was accompanied by Ms. Sumedha Wagholikar twice in this year. Student volunteer of legal aid centre visits this clinic regularly in for a research project on “Access to Justice”. Around 20 cases have been settled in this year.

    5. Family Counselling Centre M.S.W College of Karve Institute, Karve Nagar, Pune.

    Dr. K. S. Waghmare coordinates the legal aid activities of this Clinic. He visits this Clinic on Fourth Saturday of evey month. Additionally he visits this clinic as per the convenience to address their legal problems. He is also appointed as Committee member of Karve Institute’s Family Counselling Centre. Annual meeting of the committee was held on 15th February 2018. Karve Institute has had another year of excellent social work in partnership with our Legal Aid Centre.

  9. VI.  Reading Material

The faculty and student members of Legal aid centre are working on reading material on various laws. It will be published during next academic year.

We appreciate the active participation of all the students in the various activities of Legal Aid Centre. This year Raghvendra Phadnis Legal Aid award is given to Swapnil Falke (IV BA. LL.B) for his continuous work with Centre.
