Legal Aid Centre 2013-14

In this academic year, the Legal Aid Centre started working from 22nd July 2013 onwards. Students from II, III LL.B., III, IV & V B.S.L.LL.B. and LL.M. take part in all the activities of the Centre. D.T.L. students can also participate in the activities of the Centre.

Working of the Centre :
The Legal Aid Centre works on all first four days of the week from 12 noon to 1.00 p.m. The faculty and students meet in Hall No. 1 as per their schedule and discuss and chalk out the legal aid programme to be undertaken.

Legal Aid Clinics :
Besides, the Centre runs three Legal Aid Clinics. They are :

  1. Deepgriha, Tadiwala Road
  2. Dr. Sita Bhatia, Dr. Nitish Nawsagaray and Mr. D.P. Kendre attend the Clinic.

  3. Deepgriha, Market Yard
  4. Mrs. Sonali Jadhav and Mr. K.S. Waghmare attend the Clinic.
  5. Karve Institute of Social Service
  6. Mrs. Ujjwala Sakhalkar and Mrs. Suvarna Nilakh attend the Clinic.

Once in a month, legal aid meetings are attended by the above stated faculty members and student volunteers. Numerous legal aid cases come for the purposes of negotiation, counseling, mediation and if necessary, are sent to the Courts. Most of the cases pertain to divorce, maintenance, domestic violence and property disputes.

Legal Literacy Camps :
In the academic year, approximately 12 legal literacy camps were conducted. Details are as follows :

  1. Chandrakant Darode Vidyalaya, BMCC Road, Pune, 16-08-2013

  2. The legal literacy camp was organised at Chandrakant Darode Vidyalaya, BMCC Road, Pune, under the guidance of Dr. Deepa Paturkar. More than 20 students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. participated in the camp. Students from IV B.S.L. LL.B., Tapasya Parihar, Roshan Tayade, Rutuja Badmore, Hanumant Kejgir, Sampada Kangane, Priyanka Kamble, Janhavi Khatavkar, Aishwarya Bapat, Sanika Kurundwadakar, Amruta Karkhanis, Shantanu Deshpande, Venkatesh Chavan, Ankush Pacharne, Gaurav Nangre, Vikram Shinde, Sheryl Francis, Tanvi Chowdhary and Sonali Gore performed various street plays and provided the legal information on topics like Fundamental Duties and Traffic Rules. Dr. Deepa Paturkar explained the importance of legal aid and spoke on the laws relating to Domestic Violence and Dowry Prohibition.

  3. Baburao Sanas Vidaylaya, Mangalwar Peth, Pune, 19-08-2013

  4. The legal literacy camp was organised at Baburao Sanas Vidaylaya, Mangalwar Peth, Pune, under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar. More than 15 students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. participated in the camp. Students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. Tapasya Parihar, Roshan Tayade, Hanumant Kejgir, Sampada Kangane, Priyanka Kamble, Reeke Prashar, Rutuja Badmore, Sneha Kamble, Janhavi Khatavkar, Aishwarya Bapat, Sanika Kurundwadakar, Amruta Karkhanis, Shantanu Deshpande, Venkatesh Chavan, Ankush Pacharne, Gaurav Nangre, Sumedha Wagholikar and Sonali Gore performed various street plays and provided the legal information on topics like Fundamental Duties, Traffic Rules, Domestic Violence and Information on Child Abuse was provided by one student Tapasya Parihar. Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar explained the importance of legal aid and spoke on the laws relating Child Marriage.

  5. Village – Nane, Taluka – Maval, 30-08-2013

  6. The legal literacy camp was organized in Village Nane, Taluka-Maval, Pune, on 30th August 2013. More than 30 students participated and delivered speeches along with speeches on socio-legally relevant topics like Right to Education, Prevention of Domestic Violence, Rights of Consumers, etc. and street plays were also performed based on raising awareness among women about PCPNDT Act, Dowry Prohibition Act and Prevention of Domestic Violence Act.

    Sarpanch and Gramsevaks of the village were present. Ms. Apoorva Misra co-ordinated the camp under the guidance of Dr. Sanjay Jain and Shri D.P. Kendre.

  7. Dhole Patil School, Tadiwala Road, Pune, 30-08-2013

  8. The legal literacy camp was organized at Dhole Patil School, Tadiwala Road, Pune, under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar and Dr. Deepa Paturkar, faculty at ILS Law College. More than 15 students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. participated in the camp. Students from IV B.S.L. LL.B., Tapasya Parihar, Roshan Tayade, Hanumant Kejgir, Sampada Kangane, Priyanka Kamble, Reeke Prashar, Janhavi Khatavkar, Aishwarya Bapat, Sanika Kurundwadakar, Amruta Karkhanis, Shantanu Deshpande, Venkatesh Chavan, Ankush Pacharne, Gaurav Nangre, Rutuja Badmore, Sneha Kamble, Sumedha Wagholikar, Sheryl Francis, Tanvi Chowdhary and Sonali Gore performed various street plays and provided the legal information  on topics like Fundamental Duties, Traffic Rules, Domestic Violence, Child Marriage and  narrated a  poem which depicted the violence on woman. Dr. Deepa Paturkar explained the importance of legal aid and spoke on the laws relating to Child Abuse.

  9. Deepgriha Society, Tadiwala Road, 31-08-2013

  10. The camp was organized in the above stated NGO by Dr. Sita Bhatia and Mrs. Priya Sondhi with the participation of 14 LL.M. students.

    Ajinkya Kale and Ms. Kalyani Deshmukh, students of LL.M.-II anchored the camp. Three street plays were performed on Domestic Violence, Child Marriage and Married Daughter’s Share in Father’s Property. Students also explained the provisions of the laws in simple and colloquial language. Swati Surendra, student, spoke on laws pertaining to Dowry Prohibition. Dr. Sita Bhatia spoke on laws pertaining to Domestic Violence.

    The camp was attended by approximately 60 women and young girls. It ended with question-answer session. Student participants were Abhijeet Santikar, Priya Gaikwad, Priyanka Saxsena, Priyambadha Sharma, Shaukat Wani, Pooja Parma, Swati Surendra, Sambhaji Tarde, Shambhavi Bhosale, Hemant Wagh, Swati Surendra, Meera and Geetika Jain.

  11. Nav Bharat High School, Shivane, Pune, 15-01-2014

  12. The legal literacy camp was organised at Nav Bharat High School, Shivane, Pune, under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar. More than 15 students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. participated in the camp. Students from IV B.S.L. LL.B., Tapasya Parihar, Roshan Tayade, Hanumant Kejgir, Sampada Kangane, Priyanka kamble, Reeke Prashar,  Janhavi Khatavkar, Aishwarya Bapat, Sanika Kurundwadakar, Amruta Karkhanis, Shantanu Deshpande, Venkatesh Chavan, Ankush Pacharne, Gaurav Nangre, Shakul Ghatole, Gayatri Dharmadhikari and Sonali Gore performed various plays and provided the legal information  on topics like Fundamental Duties, Traffic Rules, Domestic Violence, Child Marriage, Child Labour and narrated a poem which depicted the violence on woman. Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar explained the importance of legal aid and spoke on the laws relating to Domestic Violence and Dowry Prohibition.

  13. Rajgurunagar, Pune, 25-01-2014

  14. In this legal aid camp, more than 30 students from V B.S.L. LL.B. participated, and spoke on Right to Education, Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Rights of Consumers and performed street plays on Domestic Violence, Pre-natal Sex Determination Tests and Dowry Prohibition and explained the legal provisions under the Acts – PCPNDT Act, Dowry Prohibition Act and Prevention of Domestic Violence Act.

    The target group was villagers – women and men. The camp was also attended by Sarpanches and Gramsevaks. Ms Sudha Kothari, a social activist in the area, appreciated the efforts of the students. The camps concluded with question-answer session. The camp was attended and organized by Dr. Sanjay Jain and Mr. D.P. Kendre and Ms Apoorva Misra assisted in co-ordinating the camp.

  15. Ambedkar Nagar, Market Yard, Pune, 27-01-2014

  16. A camp was conducted by the Legal Aid Centre of the III B.S.L. LL.B. students of ILS Law College, under the guidance of Mrs. Ujjwala Sakhalkar and Mrs. Sonali Jadhav. A crowd of 50-60 people had gathered to attend the Free Legal Aid Camp.

    The camp began with a street play on ‘Child Labour’ which was enacted in Marathi by the members of the Legal Aid Centre which was well received. To ensure the right message was portrayed, the theme of the play was then explained as part of a speech given by Shriya who highlighted the Right to Free Education.

    The second play that was presented was on ‘Domestic Violence’ and was enacted in Hindi. The same was emphasized upon by Shriya who gave a speech on Domestic Violence and urged the victims to stand up against such abuse.

    The plays were followed by a speech in Marathi by Mrs. Ujjwala Sakhalkar who explained the objective and purpose of the Free Legal Aid Centre in ILS Law College, Pune. She invited any and all members present to approach the Centre with their legal problems and issues which would be addressed and advised upon free of cost by the faculty and senior students of the College.

    Mrs. Ujjwala Sakhalkar and Mrs. Sonali Jadhav were approached by many women with their problems.

  17. Undri Pisoli Village – 28-01-2014

  18. Mr. Santosh Jaybhay and Dr. Nitish Nawsagaray organized the camp and II LL.B. students participated in it. They also dealt with number of cases and querries pertaining to maintenance, property rights etc.

  19. Shri Saraswati Vidya Mandir Kothrud, Pune, 06-02-2014

  20. The legal literacy camp was organized at Shri Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Kothrud, Pune, under the guidance of Dr. Deepa Paturkar. More than 15 students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. participated in the camp. Students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. Tapasya Parihar, Roshan Tayade, Hanumant Kejgir, Sampada Kangane, Priyanka Kamble, Reeke Prashar,  Janhavi Khatavkar, Aishwarya Bapat, Sanika Kurundwadakar, Amruta Karkhanis,  Venkatesh Chavan, Ankush Pacharne, Gaurav Nangre, Shakul Ghatole, Gayatri Dharmadhikari and Sonali Gore performed various street plays and provided the legal information on topics like Fundamental Duties, Traffic Rules, Domestic Violence, Child Marriage, Child Labour and  narrated a poem which depicted the violence on woman. Dr. Deepa Paturkar explained the importance of legal aid.

  21. Legal Aid Camp at Loni-Bhapkar Village, 14-02-2014.

  22. The legal literacy camp was organised at Loni–Bhapkar village under the guidance of Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar, faculty at ILS Law College. More than 18 students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. participated in the camp. The camp was arranged in the New English School, Loni-Bhapkar Gram Panchayat. Students from IV B.S.L. LL.B. Tapasya Parihar, Roshan Tayade, Hanumant Kejgir, Sampada Kangane, Priyanka Kamble, Rekee Prashar, Janhavi Khatavkar, Aishwarya Bapat, Sanika Kurundwadakar, Amruta Karkhanis, Shantanu Deshpande, Gayatri Dharmadhikari, Sumedha Wagholikar, Venkatesh Chavan, Namrata Singh, Ankush Pacharne, Gaurav Nangre and Sonali Gore performed various plays and provided the legal information  on topics like Fundamental duties, Domestic Violence, Dowry Prohibition, Child Labour, Traffic rules and narrated a poem which depicted the violence on woman. Dr. Tejaswini Malegaonkar explained the importance of legal aid and spoke on the laws relating to Domestic Violence and Dowry Prohibition. The camp was graced by the presence of Shri Babasaheb Bahpakar, Chairman of New English School Loni-Bhapkar; Advocate Vijay More, Ex-MLA Baramati Taluka; Shri Suresh Khopade, Retd. Police Commissioner Mumbai; Advocate Rajendra Kale, Chairman Baramati Bar Council; Advocate Vikram Dangde Patil; Advocate Shrikant Malegaonkar; Shri Balwant Mandge, Police Inspector of Wadgaon Police Station; Smt. Amruta Garde, Chairperson, Panchayat Samiti Baramati Taluka. The event was also covered by the Marathi paper ‘Sakal’ (Today) on 17th February 2014. Our student Gaurav Nangre made all the necessary arrangements to make this camp a success.

  23. Deepgriha Society, Hadapsar, 28-02-2014


Dr. Sita Bhatia and Mrs. Priya Sondhi organized the legal literacy for Deepgriha at Hadapsar with the participants of I & II Year LL.M. students.

Five street plays on Importance of Education for Girls, Child Marriage, Dowry, Domestic Violence, Women’s Right to Property were performed. The provisions of the laws were also explained to the target group. Geetika Jain of LL.M.-II recited a poem on Dowry. Ajinkya Kale spoke on RTI, laws pertaining to Molestation, Stalking, Voyerism and Right to Vote. Abhishek Gujar explained what is F.I.R. Swati Surendra delivered speech on Women’s Right to Property.

Dr. Sita Bhatia spoke on Importance of Law in Changing Society and Right to Maintenance. Mrs. Priya Sondhi concluded the programme by delivering the speech on Female Infanticide and Foeticide along with PCPNDT Act. Ajinkya Kale wrote the scripts, directed the street plays and anchored the whole programme. Prasad Dharaskar did the photography. The camp ended with oath taking by all against Child Marriage.

LL.M. students who participated were Ajinkya Kale, Prasad Dharaskar, Swati Surendra, Abhijit Santikar, Pooja Parma, Vidisha, Sambhaji Tarde, Geetika Jain, Rohini Kadam, Priyanka Saxena, Ajay Singh, Priyambada Sharma, Ajay Dani and Hemant Wagh.

Legal Aid Cases :
Approximately 90 cases were reported in all. Many cases involved counseling and mediation in matters like marriage, maintenance, domestic violence, property, etc. Six cases are taken to the Courts i.e. Family Court and District Court.

Legal Aid Prizes :
Faculty members of the Centre decided to award prizes to the following students :

  2. Ajinkya Kale, LL.M.-II – Raghavendra Phadnis Legal Aid Prize
  3. Tapasya Parihar, IV B.S.L. LL.B. – Legal Aid Centre’s Award
  4. Geetika Jain, LL.M.-II and Apoorva Misra, V B.S.L. LL.B. were given the Letters of Appreciation.

Panel of Lawyers :
The Legal Aid Centre is able to take deserving cases in the courts with the help of lawyers like Adv. P. Narayan, Adv. Ravi Sharma, Adv.  Guru, Adv. Medha Bavdekar, Adv. Rohit Dangare, Adv. Anagha Joshi, Adv. Nitin Apte, Adv. Vishakha Atre, Mr. Shrikant Malegaonkar and other faculty participation.

Faculty Participation :
