Project Name: Discrimination against Persons with Mental Illness across the World: A Barrier to Social Justice

Location: Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy, Indian Law Society, Pune

Qualification and experience:

  • Degree in Bachelor of Laws- LL.B (Required)
  • Work experience in mental health and disability (Preferred)

Duration- 12 months

Remuneration: Rs. 30,000- 35,000 per month (as per experience and qualification)

About Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy:

The Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy at the Indian Law Society undertakes research in the area of mental health policy and legislation. The aims of the Centre are to sensitise the community, service providers and stakeholders to protect and promote the rights of persons with mental disorders, and to promote a rights based approach to mental health policy and legislation.

The Centre is looking for three, full time, research assistants with a degree in Bachelors in Law and preferably with experience of working on or studying mental health and disability. The research assistants should have the knowledge and expertise to examine and analyse laws, have good writing skills, and possess critical analytical skills to examine laws and discriminatory practices. The research assistants should have an interest in mental health and disability with a rights based perspective.

About the Project:

The Project aims at examining legal discrimination against persons with mental illness, which is likely to happen at two levels:

a) Persons with mental illness are denied a right which is available to citizens without mental illness in the country and;

b) Persons with mental illness are denied a right which is available to other disabled citizens in the country.

The research will review laws of all member states of the United Nations to determine the extent of legal discrimination against persons with mental illness in these member states, with reference to the rights outlines in the UNCRPD (UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability). The research will cover a few key rights such as, political, civil, economic and social rights.
