ONE DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR CUM WORKSHOP ON AI AND THE LAW : 8th July 2023

AI AND THE LAW: UNLOCKING A NEW GENERATION IN THE LEGAL FIELD

8 JULY 2023

Concept Note:

Artificial Intelligence has knocked on our doors, and is here to stay. In November 2022, ChatGPT, a large language processing model, was released by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence developing company. A revolutionary release, it allowed users to interact and give various tasks to the AI, which it completed, though sometimes with questionable accuracy. Nevertheless, the existence of ChatGPT is a portent of things to come. The legal profession needs to be ready to adapt to the changes that artificial  intelligence will bring to the teaching, learning, and practice of law. In furtherance of the same, in its centenary year, ILS Law College has taken the opportunity to organise a One Day Seminar cum Workshop on ‘AI and the Law: Unlocking a New Generation in the Legal Field’.

The seminar will consist of a keynote address by Justice D.S. Naidu, who will discuss the ethical issues caused by the use of generative AI such as ChatGPT in the legal profession and legal education, and the way forward. This will be followed by an activity on the use of artificial intelligence as a teaching tool, the ways it can enhance the teaching learning process in legal education, and the cautionary measures required to develop critical thinking skills among students. The last session will be a panel discussion on the use of ChatGPT as a tool of legal professionals, the status of its use as of now, the liability of employers for issues caused by ChatGPT and the policy measures required to regulate the same. The seminar will thereafter close with a valedictory session
